Community Gardens

Phanmaggi has, over the years, made a meaningful impact on the community of Ceesay Kunda Kabilo by establishing three flourishing vegetable gardens. The harvests from these gardens directly benefit the hardworking individuals tending the fields, enabling them to secure essentials such as food, clothing, shelter, and quality education for their children. Recognizing that sustainable development hinges on consistent care, a modest annual maintenance fee is charged to ensure the gardens' continued vitality and support for the community.

Re-forestration Project

Saba, nestled in the heart of the Sahel region, faces the challenges posed by deforestation and its damaging effects. To address this, Phanmaggi joined hands with the Ceesay Kunda Kabilo, embarking on a transformative initiative to plant 2,000 trees along the community's outskirts. This effort aims to combat soil degradation and mitigate the far-reaching impacts of deforestation, nurturing the resilience and sustainability of Saba's environment.

Fertlizer Chamber

Guided by our organization's mission, we continuously seek innovative strategies to address the challenges we face. Organic food cultivation holds a special place in our hearts, and we are deeply committed to advancing it. In partnership with the dedicated team at Engineers Without Borders [Karlsruhe, Germany], we are striving to make a meaningful impact in this field. With EWB's invaluable technical and financial support, we have constructed a fertilizer chamber designed to produce organic fertilizer that will enhance crop and vegetable growth within the community served by Phanmaggi, and extend its benefits to neighboring areas. This initiative will empower the community to share their newfound knowledge, helping other regions transition away from harmful synthetic fertilizers that pose risks to both the environment and the health of consumers.

Community Tractor & Plough

Phanmaggi has provided the Ceesay Kunda Kabilo with a Massey Ferguson tractor, complete with a trailer and plow. This valuable equipment is loaned to community members, enabling them to plow their fields, transport produce, and carry building materials. The income generated from these rentals helps maintain the equipment and fund other important community initiatives, such as fencing vegetable gardens.

Scholarships

Guided by our organization's mission, we are dedicated to supporting deserving and talented students in the STEM field, enabling them to pursue undergraduate programs at the University of The Gambia. This year, we are proud to announce Ebrima Ceesay as the recipient of our scholarship. Last year, Ebrima Conteh was honored with the scholarship and has since been accepted into the UTG School of Medicine. Each scholarship is valued at 41,000 Dalasis per annum, empowering these bright minds to achieve their academic and professional dreams.

Gamjiyo Project

Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Engineers Without Borders - Karlsruhe, the vegetable gardens provided by Phanmaggi for the women of Saba have undergone a remarkable transformation. Solar-powered boreholes, complete with water-retaining tanks strategically placed throughout the gardens, have resolved the long-standing water issues that the women have faced for years. This innovative project is a joint initiative, funded by the German government agency for international development and Engineers Without Borders - Karlsruhe. The retrofit includes the installation of a borehole, an elevated water storage tank, solar-powered water pumps, and reservoirs linked by trenched pipes to ensure a reliable and sustainable water supply. The project is set for completion by December 15th, 2019, bringing lasting benefits to the community.

Electricity Project

Energy is the cornerstone of any successful development initiative. Through our electrification project, we aim to bring the power of energy to those who need it most. When people have access to the right resources, they are empowered to unlock their full potential and gain the confidence to thrive. Electricity enables vital solutions, such as cold storage, to preserve goods that would otherwise spoil before reaching the market. This transformative project was made possible with an investment of 900,000 Gambian dalasis.

Covid-19 Food Drive

Food insecurity remains a significant barrier to development, and when compounded by a global pandemic disrupting supply chains—particularly those for essential food items—hunger quickly becomes a pressing reality. In response to this challenge, the Phanmaggi diaspora launched a heartfelt fundraising campaign last week to address the urgent needs of our community.

Through this collective effort, we successfully raised funds to purchase 70 bags of rice and 30 bags of sugar, which were distributed earlier today to our community partners in Badibu Saba. This initiative would not have been possible without the generous contributions of our members and supporters.

To everyone who donated, whether in cash or kind, we extend our deepest gratitude. May God bless and reward you abundantly for your kindness and support.

Cold Storage, and Meeting Place Project

The women of Saba, who cultivate vibrant vegetable gardens through the support of Phanmaggi, are set to benefit from a transformative upgrade. Thanks to the innovative efforts of Engineers Without Borders - Karlsruhe, these gardens will now feature a solar-powered cold storage facility.

This sustainable addition aims to significantly extend the shelf life of the produce harvested from the gardens, reducing spoilage and enhancing food security for the community. The project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and technology in driving meaningful change in rural agricultural practices.

Through this initiative, the women of Saba are empowered to maximize the potential of their hard work, ensuring that their produce remains fresh, marketable, and ready to nourish families for longer periods.
